The Emirate of Granada was the last Muslim state in the Iberian Peninsula, founded by Muhammad I ibn Nasr, who established the Nasrid dynasty after the Christian conquest of Cordoba. It survived for over two centuries by paying tribute to Castile and playing off its neighbours against each other, and prospered through trade, agriculture and silk, becoming a final home of Andalusian culture. Its kings built the Alhambra, the palace complex above the city. The union of Castile and Aragon through the marriage of Isabella and Ferdinand ended its independence, and after a ten-year war, the last emir, Boabdil, surrendered the city. The fall of Granada marked the end of the Reconquista.
