Founding of WWF International

29 April 1961

WWF, originally the World Wildlife Fund, was founded on 29 April 1961 and set up in Morges, Switzerland. It was started by a group of conservationists and scientists, including Julian Huxley, Peter Scott and Max Nicholson, who were worried about the damage to African wildlife and wanted a body that could raise funds for conservation. The giant panda, taken from an animal at the London Zoo, became its logo. WWF grew into one of the largest independent conservation organizations, with national offices in many countries and work on endangered species, forests, oceans and climate change. It is known as the World Wide Fund for Nature outside the United States and Canada.
