Michelangelo was born on 6 March 1475 in Caprese Michelangelo. An Italian sculptor, painter and architect of the High Renaissance, Michelangelo was born near Arezzo and trained in Florence. His sculptures include the Pietà in St Peter's Basilica and the marble David, which he completed before the age of thirty. He painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II between 1508 and 1512 and, later, the Last Judgment on the altar wall. In his old age he worked as the architect of St Peter's, designing its dome. He also wrote poetry. Michelangelo was already called divine in his lifetime.
