House of Romanov

from 1613 to 1762

The House of Romanov came to the Russian throne in 1613, when a national assembly chose the teenage Mikhail Romanov as tsar, bringing an end to the chaos of the Time of Troubles. His successors transformed the country, above all Peter the Great, who modernised the state and founded Saint Petersburg, and the empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great. The direct male line died out with Elizabeth in 1762, but the dynasty continued through the related house of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov, and it ruled until 1917. Nicholas II abdicated during the February Revolution and was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
