The International Ice Hockey Federation is the worldwide governing body of ice hockey and in-line hockey. It was founded in Paris as the Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace by delegates from a handful of European countries, and it is now based in Zurich. The federation sets the international rules, organizes the annual men's and women's world championships and oversees ice hockey at the Olympic Games. It also maintains the world rankings and runs competitions at junior level. Its membership has grown from a few European founders to dozens of national associations on every continent, although the sport remains strongest in North America and northern and central Europe.
