The Germany men's national football team played its first international match in Basel in 1908, losing to Switzerland, a few years after the German Football Association, the DFB, had been founded in 1900. The team became one of the strongest in the world after the Second World War, winning the World Cup as West Germany in 1954, 1974 and 1990, and as a united Germany in 2014. It has also won the European Championship three times, in 1972, 1980 and 1996. Its style, based on discipline and resilience, produced such stars as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller and Lothar Matthaus. The team reached the final of the World Cup more often than any other European team.
