Founding of Boeing

15 July 1916

Boeing is an American aerospace company that builds commercial airliners, military aircraft, rockets and satellites. It was founded in Seattle by the businessman William Boeing in the middle of the First World War and, after a name change in the following year, became the Boeing Airplane Company. It grew by making military aircraft and mail planes and, after the Second World War, became the world's leading producer of passenger jets with models such as the 707, the 747 and the 737. The company merged with McDonnell Douglas in 1997 and later moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago and then to Virginia. Its reputation was damaged by the fatal crashes of two 737 MAX aircraft in 2018 and 2019.
