The Russo-Turkish War of 1735-1739, called the Fifth Russo-Turkish War here, was fought between the Russian Empire under Empress Anna and the Ottoman Empire, with Austria joining Russia in 1737. Russia sought access to the Black Sea and wanted to end raids by Crimean Tatars, and its armies under Burkhard Christoph von Munnich and Peter Lacy captured Azov and invaded Crimea and Moldavia. Austria fared badly and was defeated by the Ottomans, forcing it to make a separate peace. By the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739, Russia regained Azov but had to demolish its fortifications and was not allowed a fleet on the Black Sea. Its larger goals were achieved only later, in the wars under Catherine the Great.
