The Afsharid dynasty was an Iranian dynasty founded by Nader Shah, a military commander of Turkmen origin who rose to power as the Safavid state declined. He drove out the Afghans and Ottomans who had occupied parts of Iran, and in 1736 had himself crowned shah. Nader then conquered Afghanistan, and in 1739 invaded India, where he sacked Delhi and carried away treasures including the Peacock Throne and the Koh-i-Noor diamond. His rule grew harsh and he was assassinated by his own officers. The empire fell apart, and only a small territory in Khorasan remained under his descendants until the Qajars took over.
