Eleventh Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 2,150 BCE to 1,991 BCE

The Eleventh Dynasty of Egypt was a dynasty from Thebes that arose in the First Intermediate Period, when the country was divided among rival rulers. Its early kings, the Intefs, controlled Upper Egypt, and Mentuhotep II defeated the rival Heracleopolitan kings of the Tenth Dynasty and reunified the country, which marks the beginning of the Middle Kingdom. He built a remarkable mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari and was later revered as a founder of the era. His successors continued his building and expeditions, but the last king, Mentuhotep IV, was followed by his vizier Amenemhat, who became Amenemhat I and founded the Twelfth Dynasty.
