Tenth Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 2,050 BCE to 2,000 BCE

The Tenth Dynasty was one of the dynasties of the First Intermediate Period in ancient Egypt, a time when the country was divided after the collapse of the Old Kingdom. Its kings ruled from Herakleopolis in Middle Egypt, and they are often treated together with the Ninth Dynasty as the Herakleopolitan kings, who controlled the north. They fought a long struggle with the rival rulers of Thebes in the south, who formed the Eleventh Dynasty. The text called the Instruction for Merikare, probably composed for a king of this house, is a famous piece of political advice. The Theban king Mentuhotep II eventually defeated the Herakleopolitans and reunified Egypt, beginning the Middle Kingdom.
