Ninth Dynasty of Egypt

from c. 2,160 BCE to 2,050 BCE

The Ninth Dynasty of Egypt was the first of the Herakleopolitan dynasties of the First Intermediate Period, ruling from Herakleopolis Magna in Middle Egypt after the collapse of the central authority of the Old Kingdom. It was founded, according to later tradition, by a king named Khety, sometimes called Meryibre, who is described in the sources as a harsh ruler. The dynasty controlled the north and parts of Middle Egypt, and was in conflict with the rival Theban line of the south, which formed the Eleventh Dynasty. Few monuments and records of the rulers survive, and their order is uncertain, since later king lists are incomplete. The Ninth and Tenth dynasties are often treated together by historians.
