Discovery of TRAPPIST-1e

22 February 2017

TRAPPIST-1e is one of seven known Earth-sized planets orbiting TRAPPIST-1, an ultracool red dwarf about 40 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. The system was found by a team led by Michael Gillon using the TRAPPIST telescopes in Chile and Morocco, with follow-up from other observatories, including NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Planet e is slightly smaller than Earth, orbits in a little over six days, and lies within the star's habitable zone, where liquid water could exist on a surface under the right conditions. It has become one of the best studied rocky exoplanets, and observations with the James Webb Space Telescope are testing whether it has an atmosphere.
