Deep Blue defeats Garry Kasparov

11 May 1997

On 11 May 1997, in New York, IBM's chess computer Deep Blue won the sixth and final game of a rematch against the world champion Garry Kasparov, giving the machine a victory of 3.5 to 2.5. Kasparov had won the first match in 1996. Deep Blue could examine 200 million positions a second. Kasparov, who accused IBM of cheating, resigned in 19 moves after a blunder in the final game. IBM refused a rematch and dismantled the machine. It was the first time that a computer defeated a reigning world champion under tournament conditions.
