Tutankhamun died around 1,324 BCE in Thebes, aged about 19. An Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, Tutankhamun came to the throne as a child, probably aged about nine, in the years after the reign of Akhenaten. Under the influence of advisers such as Ay and Horemheb, the worship of the traditional gods, especially Amun, was restored and the capital returned from Amarna. He died at around eighteen or nineteen, and the cause of his death is still debated. His fame comes from the discovery of his nearly intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings by Howard Carter in November 1922, which held thousands of objects, including the golden funerary mask, and provided an unmatched view of royal burial in ancient Egypt.
