Nefertiti was born around 1,370 BCE in Thebes. An Egyptian queen of the Eighteenth Dynasty, Nefertiti was the Great Royal Wife of Akhenaten, the pharaoh who introduced the worship of the sun disc Aten. Reliefs show her playing an unusually prominent role, sometimes depicted in the same scale as the king, and she may have ruled briefly in her own right or as co-regent, though scholars disagree on this. Her painted limestone bust, found at Amarna in 1912 and now in Berlin, is among the most famous works of ancient art. Her disappearance from the record around the end of Akhenaten's reign remains unexplained, and her tomb has not been identified.
