Chavín culture

from c. 1,300s BCE to 500s BCE

The Chavin culture was an early civilisation of the Andes in what is now Peru, centred on the ceremonial site of Chavin de Huantar in the highlands. Its art, with images of jaguars, eagles and serpents, combined in fantastic figures, spread widely across the Andes, and the site was a pilgrimage centre for a religious cult. The main temple has galleries and passages inside its stone platforms, where acoustics and light may have been used in rituals, and an image called the Lanzon stands in the central gallery. Chavin influenced textiles, pottery and metalwork in a wide area, though historians debate whether it was a state or a religious network. The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
