Sandro Botticelli died on 17 May 1510 in Florence, aged about 65. An Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, Botticelli worked in Florence under the patronage of the Medici family. His best-known works, The Birth of Venus and Primavera, combine classical mythology with a graceful, linear style and are among the most recognizable images of the period. He also painted many Madonnas and portraits, and he contributed to the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His reputation faded after the rise of High Renaissance styles and the influence of the preacher Savonarola in Florence, and it was only rediscovered in the nineteenth century.
