Robert Schumann died on 29 July 1856 in Endenich, aged 46. A German composer and critic, Schumann was a central figure of the Romantic movement. He wrote piano cycles such as Carnaval and Kinderszenen, four symphonies, a celebrated piano concerto and many songs, especially in the year 1840 when he married the pianist Clara Wieck after a legal battle with her father. He edited the Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik, where he promoted Chopin and the young Brahms. He suffered from mental illness, attempted suicide in 1854 and spent his final years in an asylum near Bonn.
