Death of Osama bin Laden

2 May 2011

Osama bin Laden died on 2 May 2011 in Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad (2005-2012), aged 54. A Saudi-born militant, bin Laden came from a wealthy family and went to Afghanistan to support the resistance to the Soviet invasion in the 1980s. He founded the organisation al-Qaeda, which in 1998 issued a call for attacks on Americans, and was behind the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that year. Al-Qaeda carried out the attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States, which killed nearly three thousand people and led to the American-led war in Afghanistan. After a manhunt of almost ten years, he was killed by US Navy SEALs in a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in 2011.
