George Washington died on 14 December 1799 in Mount Vernon, aged 67. An American planter, surveyor and soldier, Washington commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and led it to victory over Britain. In 1787 he presided over the Constitutional Convention, and in 1789 he was unanimously elected the first president of the United States, serving two terms and setting precedents for the office, including the peaceful transfer of power. In his Farewell Address he warned against political factions and foreign entanglements. He lived at Mount Vernon in Virginia, where he held enslaved people, and in his will he provided for their freedom after the death of his wife.
