Francisco Goya died on 16 April 1828 in Bordeaux, aged 82. A Spanish painter and printmaker, Goya rose from a provincial background in Aragon to become first court painter to the Spanish crown, and he produced portraits of the royal family and the aristocracy. After a serious illness in 1792 and 1793 he lost his hearing, and his work took a darker and more critical tone, as in the etching series Los Caprichos and The Disasters of War, which show the horrors of the French occupation of Spain. His painting The Third of May 1808 is a powerful image of execution by firing squad. His late Black Paintings were made on the walls of his house, and he died in exile in Bordeaux.
