Ferdinand Marcos died on 28 September 1989 in Honolulu, aged 72. A Filipino politician and lawyer, Marcos was elected president in 1965 and was re-elected in 1969. In 1972 he declared martial law, which allowed him to rule by decree, close Congress and imprison opponents, and he remained in power until 1986. His regime, supported by his wife Imelda Marcos, was accused of widespread human rights abuses and plundering state wealth. The assassination of the opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1983 galvanized resistance, and a disputed snap election in 1986 sparked the People Power Revolution, which forced him to flee to Hawaii. He died in exile in 1989, and his son Ferdinand Jr. was elected president in 2022.
