Augustine of Hippo died on 28 August 430 CE in Hippo Regius, aged 75. A Christian theologian and philosopher, Augustine was born in Thagaste in Roman North Africa and became a teacher of rhetoric. After a period as a follower of Manichaeism and a spiritual crisis, he converted to Christianity in Milan and later became bishop of Hippo. His Confessions are a famous account of his life and search for God, and The City of God, written after the sack of Rome in 410, presents a Christian view of history. His writings on grace, sin and free will shaped Western Christianity, Catholic and Protestant alike. He is a saint and a Doctor of the Church. He died while the Vandals were besieging Hippo.
