Construction of Zagreb Cathedral

1093

Zagreb Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to Saints Stephen and Ladislaus, is the seat of the archbishop of Zagreb, and its history begins with the founding of the Zagreb diocese by the Hungarian king Ladislaus I. The first church was Romanesque and was badly damaged during the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century, after which it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. During the Ottoman wars the cathedral was surrounded by defensive walls. A severe earthquake in 1880 caused great damage, and it was restored in the neo-Gothic style under the architect Hermann Bollé, who gave it two tall spires. These are the tallest in Croatia, and the building is the city's most recognizable landmark.
