Construction of Vnukovo International Airport

2 July 1941

Vnukovo International Airport serves Moscow from a site about thirty kilometers southwest of the center. It was opened in the early 1940s, at the time of the Second World War, and was one of the main airports of the Soviet capital. In the Soviet period it was used for many domestic and international flights, and it later became known for its government and VIP terminal, used by officials and foreign leaders arriving in Moscow. After the fall of the Soviet Union it was modernized and expanded, and today it is one of the busiest of Moscow's airports. It has been a base for several Russian airlines.
