Construction of Seville Cathedral

1402

Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and one of the largest churches of any kind. Construction started in the early 15th century on the site of the city's great mosque, built by the Almohads, after Seville had been taken by Ferdinand III of Castile in 1248. The minaret of the old mosque survives as the Giralda tower, and the Patio de los Naranjos is a reminder of the mosque's courtyard. The building was largely finished in the early 16th century, and it houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, together with the Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias.
