The Ottoman Interregnum was a civil war among the sons of Sultan Bayezid I after Timur defeated him at the Battle of Ankara; Bayezid died in captivity in 1403. His sons Süleyman, İsa, Mehmed and Musa fought for control of the Ottoman lands, with Süleyman holding Edirne and the European territories and Mehmed based in Anatolia. The Byzantine Empire, Serbia and other neighbors played the brothers against each other. Mehmed eventually defeated Musa and became sole ruler as Mehmed I, reuniting the realm. The empire survived this crisis, and Mehmed is often called the restorer of the Ottoman state.
