Construction of Royal Opera House

15 May 1858

The Royal Opera House is an opera and ballet theatre in Covent Garden, in central London, and the home of the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet. The present building is the third theatre on the site, opened in 1858 after fire destroyed the previous ones, and it was designed by Edward Middleton Barry. Its history goes back to 1732, when the first theatre was built there by John Rich. The name Royal Opera House has been used since 1892. The auditorium, with its red and gold interior, is famous throughout the world, and the building was extensively redeveloped in the 1990s with a new foyer and rehearsal spaces.
