The Registan is the historic heart of Samarkand in Uzbekistan, a public square framed by three monumental madrasas, or Islamic schools, decorated with blue tiles and mosaics. The earliest, the Ulugh Beg Madrasa, was built in the early fifteenth century for the Timurid ruler and astronomer Ulugh Beg, grandson of Timur, and it was one of the main centres for the study of science and mathematics in the Islamic world. The other two, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori, were added in the seventeenth century under the Shaybanid rulers of the city. The ensemble is a masterpiece of Central Asian Islamic architecture. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Samarkand, and it was restored in the Soviet era and after.
