Construction of National Library of Australia

23 March 1961

The National Library of Australia in Canberra is the country's largest reference library and holds the national collection of books, maps, manuscripts, photographs and other material. It grew out of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library, founded in 1901, and became a separate institution in 1960. The foundation stone of its present building, designed by the architects Bunning and Madden, was laid in 1961, and the library moved in during the late 1960s. The neoclassical structure, with its marble hall and stained glass, stands beside Lake Burley Griffin. The library runs the online service Trove, which gives public access to digitized records from around Australia.
