Construction of Moscow Conservatory

September 1866

The Moscow Conservatory is one of Russia's leading institutions of music education, founded by the pianist and conductor Nikolai Rubinstein with the backing of the Russian Musical Society. The composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky was among its first teachers, and the school trained many other greats, among them Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin and later generations of Russian musicians. The main building, on Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street, with its Great Hall, was completed at the end of the nineteenth century. The conservatory is also the venue of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, held every four years, one of the most prestigious contests for young musicians.
