Construction of Mariinsky Theatre

2 October 1860

The Mariinsky Theatre is a historic theatre in Saint Petersburg, which houses an opera and ballet company and an orchestra. It is named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Tsar Alexander II, and the building was designed by the architect Albert Cavos. The theatre became the main home of imperial Russian opera and ballet. The ballets of Tchaikovsky, including Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, were premiered there, with choreography by Marius Petipa, and many great dancers and singers performed on its stage. In the Soviet era the ballet company was known as the Kirov, and the name Mariinsky was restored after 1991. Valery Gergiev has directed the theatre since the late 1980s.
