Construction of Malbork Castle

1270

Malbork Castle, also known by its German name Marienburg, is a huge brick fortress on the Nogat River in northern Poland. It was begun by the Teutonic Knights in the late thirteenth century and grew to become the headquarters of the order, when the Grand Master moved there from Venice in 1309. With its great system of walls, towers, courtyards and halls, it is the largest castle in the world by land area and the largest brick castle. After the Thirteen Years' War the castle passed to the Kingdom of Poland, and it was used as a royal residence. It was heavily damaged in 1945 and carefully restored after the Second World War. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
