Construction of Imperial College London

1907

Imperial College London is a public research university in South Kensington, London, specialising in science, engineering, medicine and business. It was formed by royal charter from the merger of the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City and Guilds College, and it stands on land bought with profits from the Great Exhibition of 1851, as part of the vision of Prince Albert to create a centre for science and the arts. It was for a time part of the University of London and became fully independent in the first decade of the twenty-first century. It is known for its scientific research, which includes work on epidemiology, and it has produced many Nobel laureates.
