Geghard is a medieval Armenian monastery in the Kotayk province, east of Yerevan, in a gorge of the Azat River, partly carved out of the rock of the mountain. Its name means monastery of the spear, in reference to the spear that wounded Jesus and that was once kept there, according to tradition. Earlier there was a sacred spring in a cave where a chapel was built in the early centuries of Christianity. The main church was completed in the early thirteenth century, during a period of Armenian revival under the Zakarid princes, and rock-cut chambers and tombs were added later. The monastery was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000, together with the Upper Azat Valley.
