The Anglo-Zulu War was fought between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, after British officials, who wanted to unite the region under British control, issued an ultimatum to the Zulu king Cetshwayo that he could not accept. A British column was almost wiped out by Zulu warriors at the battle of Isandlwana, one of the worst defeats of the British Army by a native force, but a small garrison held off a larger Zulu force at Rorke's Drift on the same day. Reinforcements arrived, and the British defeated the Zulu army at Ulundi, which ended the war. Cetshwayo was captured and exiled, and the Zulu kingdom was divided.
