Strasbourg Cathedral, in Alsace, is a major Gothic cathedral which began with a Romanesque building started under Bishop Werner of Habsburg. Work continued over the following centuries, and the Gothic design that gives the cathedral its character, with a rose window and a facade covered in sculpture, dates from the thirteenth century. The single tower, with its openwork spire, was completed in the fifteenth century, and at 142 metres it was the tallest building in the world until the nineteenth century. Inside, there is an astronomical clock with moving figures. The cathedral was a model of Gothic style for German authors such as Goethe, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
