Construction of Burgos Cathedral

1221

Burgos Cathedral is a Gothic cathedral in the Castilian city of Burgos in northern Spain, begun in the early thirteenth century under Bishop Mauricio and with the support of King Ferdinand III of Castile. Its design was influenced by French cathedrals, which Mauricio had seen on his travels, and it was expanded over the next centuries with chapels, a cloister and lantern towers. In the fifteenth century, the architect Juan de Colonia added the openwork spires on the west front. Inside lie the tombs of El Cid, the Castilian hero, and his wife Jimena. The cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984 as a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic art.
