The Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt belongs to the New Kingdom and is the first of the Ramesside dynasties. It was founded by Ramesses I, a military officer, and continued under Seti I, who restored Egyptian control over Syria and Canaan, and Ramesses II, who ruled for more than six decades. Ramesses II fought the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh and later concluded a peace treaty with them, and he built on a vast scale, including the temples of Abu Simbel and his new capital at Pi-Ramesses. Merneptah's stele, which records a campaign in Canaan, contains the earliest known mention of Israel. The dynasty then declined in a series of short reigns and disputes over the succession, giving way to the Twentieth Dynasty.
