William McKinley was born on 29 January 1843 in Niles. The 25th President of the United States, McKinley was a Civil War veteran from Ohio who served in Congress and as governor. As a Republican, he championed protective tariffs and the gold standard, and he defeated William Jennings Bryan in 1896. His presidency saw the Spanish-American War of 1898, which brought the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico under American control, and the annexation of Hawaii. Re-elected in 1900, he was shot in September 1901 by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, and died eight days later. Theodore Roosevelt, his vice president, succeeded him.
