Edvard Grieg was born on 15 June 1843 in Bergen. A Norwegian composer and pianist of the Romantic era, Grieg drew on Norwegian folk music to create a national voice in classical music. His best-known works include the Piano Concerto in A minor, the incidental music for Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, which contains In the Hall of the Mountain King and Morning Mood, and the Lyric Pieces for piano. He also wrote songs, often performed by his wife, the soprano Nina Hagerup. He lived in Bergen, where his home, Troldhaugen, is now a museum, and he was admired by Tchaikovsky and Grainger.
