Henry VIII of England was born on 28 June 1491 in Palace of Placentia. King of England from 1509 until 1547, Henry VIII was the second Tudor monarch and succeeded his father Henry VII. His desire for a male heir and his wish to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon led him to break with the papacy, and in 1534 the Act of Supremacy made him head of the Church of England. He dissolved the monasteries and confiscated their wealth, and executed opponents, including Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell. He married six times, and had two of his wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, executed. He expanded the navy, fought wars in France and Scotland, and formally united England and Wales. He was succeeded by his son, Edward VI.
