Shah Jahan was born on 15 January 1592 in Lahore Fort. The fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan ruled over a period often considered the golden age of Mughal architecture. He is best known for building the Taj Mahal in Agra as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. He also commissioned the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid in Delhi, and the Peacock Throne, and moved his capital to Shahjahanabad. His costly wars and building projects strained the treasury. After falling ill in 1657, he was deposed by his son Aurangzeb in a war of succession and held under house arrest in Agra Fort until his death.
