Raphael was born on 6 April 1483 in Urbino. An Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, Raphael was born in Urbino, the son of a court painter, and trained in Perugia before working in Florence, where he painted a series of Madonnas. In 1508 he was called to Rome by Pope Julius II and decorated rooms in the Vatican, producing frescoes such as The School of Athens, famed for its harmony and clarity. He also painted portraits and altarpieces, such as the Sistine Madonna, and was appointed architect of St Peter's Basilica. He died on his thirty-seventh birthday, and was buried in the Pantheon.
