Babur was born on 14 February 1483 in Andijan. The founder of the Mughal Empire in India, Babur was a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, and inherited the small principality of Fergana in Central Asia as a boy. After repeated failures to hold Samarkand, he took Kabul in 1504 and, from there, invaded northern India, defeating the Sultan of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodi, at the first Battle of Panipat in 1526. He also defeated the Rajput confederation led by Rana Sanga. He wrote an engaging memoir in Chagatai Turkic, the Baburnama, which describes his travels and observations of people, plants and animals. His son Humayun succeeded him.
