Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born on 25 February 1841 in Limoges. A French painter and sculptor, Renoir was one of the leading figures of Impressionism. Starting as a porcelain painter, he studied with Gleyre and became friends with Monet, Sisley and Bazille, painting scenes of leisure with a soft, luminous touch, as in Bal du moulin de la Galette and Luncheon of the Boating Party. His later work shifted to a more classical style, with nudes and bathers in warm colors. In his last decades he suffered from rheumatoid arthritis but continued to paint with brushes strapped to his hands. His son Jean became a celebrated film director.
