The 14th century BCE saw the great powers of the Late Bronze Age Near East linked by diplomacy, marriage alliances and trade. In Egypt the long reign of Amenhotep III gave way to Akhenaten's religious upheaval at Amarna and the brief rule of Tutankhamun, while diplomatic letters preserved at Amarna show the pharaohs corresponding with kings in Babylon, Mitanni, Hatti and Assyria. The Hittite king Suppiluliuma I expanded his realm and shattered the power of Mitanni, and Assyria began its rise under Ashur-uballit I. Mycenaean palaces flourished in Greece, and ships such as the one wrecked at Uluburun carried copper, tin and luxury goods around the Mediterranean.
