Margrethe II of Denmark was born on 16 April 1940 in Amalienborg. A Danish monarch, Margrethe II succeeded her father Frederik IX in 1972 and became the first queen to reign over Denmark since the fourteenth century, after a change in the succession law that allowed women to inherit. She studied archaeology and political science, and became known as a skilled artist, designing costumes and sets, illustrating books including an edition of The Lord of the Rings, and translating literature. Respected as a dignified and informal head of state, she reigned for over fifty years and abdicated in January 2024 in favor of her son, who became Frederik X.
