Hatshepsut was born around 1,507 BCE in Thebes. The fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt, Hatshepsut was the daughter of Thutmose I and the wife of Thutmose II. After his death she acted as regent for her young stepson, Thutmose III, and then took the title of pharaoh, ruling for over two decades, one of the most successful female rulers of Egypt. Her reign was a time of peace and prosperity, with trade expeditions, notably to the land of Punt, and building projects, among them her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. After her death many of her monuments were defaced, probably during the reign of Thutmose III. Her mummy was identified in 2007.
